After years of neglect by his owner, Herbert finally found himself alone and at the dump. He had spent two days sitting next to a rather talkative teapot, and had watched several of his new 'dump friends' find new owners, including a fancy but dusty glass decanter, an old clock with no hour hand, and a chest of drawers whose knobs had fallen off. He was starting to think no one would want to take him home! Just then, in came a girl with a pocket full of change, she picked him up in one hand, inspected him closely and smiled... Herbert was perfect for the project she had in mind! She quickly handed over 50p to the attendant, and whisked Herbert off to get started.
And Herbert turned out perfectly! I had been looking for something to paint with my 'Plasti-kote Projekt Paint' but hadn't found anything quite right until I spotted this little frog. In a previous life he would have held a brillo pad next to the sink, but I thought he would do a good job at holding a whole host of things.
I gave him a quick sand down with some sand paper, then sprayed him with a thin coat of the 'Plasti-kote'. I waited for this to dry then sprayed a second layer, I repeated the process until he was covered completely. It probably took about 5 thin coats in all.
Talking of frogs, you must listen to this song by M83. It is soo cute and happy. I'm pretty sure Herbert is the frog in the song.

This is going to absolutely revolutionise my thought process. Who knew you could take such boring, dated things and bring them bang up to date? Can't wait to delve into my local charity shops to see what treasures are waiting!

ReplyDeleteIt's amazing what a difference a coat of paint makes. Will definitely be keeping an eye out for weird quirky items in the charity shop now, well even more so than usual.

Great project. If you guys are going to be using those spray paints bear in mind that the VOCs on some are worse than others. Hammerite is a lot more noxious to work with that some of the uktoolcentre.co.uk plasti-kote. Buying from a tool centre can save you a lot in comparison to the direct suppliers. Happy diggin' and sprayin' !
