Book Club - Ready Player One

ready player one book review

"Before long, billions of people around the world were working and playing in the OASIS every day. Some of them met, fell in love, and got married without ever setting foot on the same continent. The lines of distinction between a person's real identity and that of their avatar began to blur."

Today I want to talk about a super cool book that I read recently! Ready Player One had been patiently sitting in my Amazon wishlist for quite a few months, and when my favourite geekery you tuber Comicbookgirl19, mentioned this book at the end of one of her GOT review episodes, I decided to finally go for it. And am I glad I did!

Ready Player One tells the story of nerdy 18 year old, Wade Watts, living in the year 2045. The book describes a dystopian future where humans have been ignoring the planet for years, primarily because of an alternate reality called Oasis.

“If I was feeling depressed or frustrated about my lot in life, all I had to do was tap the Player One button, and my worries would instantly slip away as my mind focused itself on the relentless pixelated onslaught on the screen in front of me.”

Created by mega brain James Halliday, (a Steve Jobs/Bill Gates type) Oasis is a massively multiplayer online virtual reality simulation, kind of like World Of Warcraft, but much much bigger. The users have virtual reality glasses as well as gloves, so it really feels like they are there, hence the reason most people are totally absorbed in this online universe, rather than wanting to actually experience the real one. It's really an elaboration of the way that technology has taken over our own world in the present. As you read you are able to draw a lot of comparisons to Facebook and other social networking sites.

“Being human totally sucks most of the time. Videogames are the only thing that make life bearable.”

The book heavily references 80's pop culture, in fact, it is the central theme. There are so many 80"s references you are bound to recognise a few, but unless you are an expert on the era, the majority of them will probably go straight over your head!  Being an 80's fan this was one of my favourite elements of the book. Some of my favourite films and songs are mentioned! And it feels like such a payoff when you 'get' one of the in jokes.

"We visited the planet Goondocks and finished the entire Goonies quest in just one day. Arty played through it as Martha Plimpton's character Stef, while I played as Mikey, Sean Astin's character. It was entirely too much fun."

Anywho, the promise of the book is that James Halliday, the creator, passes away. Having no heir to pass on his fortune to, he has developed an elaborate competition to determine who is worthy of his riches, in the event of his death. A cryptic riddle starts the game off and then the hunt is on for the hidden easter egg within the game. Those that participate are named Gunters (Egg hunters) It just so happens that our friend Wade is one of these Gunters, and we follow his journey unravelling the first clue and all those that follow.

Three hidden keys open three secret gates
Wherein the errant will be tested for worthy traits
And those with the skill to survive these traits
Will reach the end where the prize awaits.

I must say, I LOVED this book! If you are into your 80's pop culture or gaming in any way I would definitely recommend this book. As I was reading it I was thinking how awesome it would be if they made this into a movie. Well guess what? It turns out they are! It's in the very early stages at the moment but it looks like Zak Penn, known for being the writer for The Avengers movie, is likely to take on the adaptation. I just hope they do it justice!

I like to speculate about the actors that will play the characters when a book is adapted into a movie.  Have you read this book? Who do you think they will cast?

I bought my Kindle copy of Ready Player One from Amazon for £3.49..

“I created the OASIS because I never felt at home in the real world. I didn't know how to connect with the people there. I was afraid, for all of my life, right up until I knew it was ending. That was when I realized, as terrifying and painful as reality can be, it's also the only place where you can find true happiness. Because reality is real.”

Wedding Prep

wedding cake flowers
Hi there folks! It sure has been a while hasn't it! If you didn't already know, the reason for my disappearance from Blog land is because I have been off planning a wedding and getting married!

I have so much to fill you in on, but I thought I would start by travelling back in time a few months and showing you some of the prep we did for the wedding. If you'd like to see my earlier wedding posts, you can find them here

Right from the beginning we knew that this wedding was going to be 99% DIO (Do it ourselves). Luckily we had help from our amazingly talented parents, and lots of our friends and family pitched in too. It was an incredible amount of work, and we all went a little loopy at times but we finally pulled it off! So before you get to see photos from the day itself, here are some pics I took along the way.

The picture above is of some of the flowers my mum made for the cake, it was gorgeous!
DIY wedding invites
I designed and hand made all the invites, it gave me an excuse to watch a lot of TV while I was doing it!
Mint wedding inviteDIY confetti cone
We made little confetti cones and my mum, her neighbours and my granny all collected petals and dried them out.

wedding gift tote bag
I made tote bags as gifts for the MOB (mother of the bride) and MOG (mother of the groom), and little make up bags for my bridesmaids.

succulents
My Mum purchased many varieties of succulent in the search for the perfect ones to adorn our bouquets and the boys button holes.

Instead of a traditional wedding breakfast, we opted for a picnic! Each table had one of these crates full of yummy food!

We made our own elderflower cordial for our special toasting drink instead of champagne.

Many signs were painted to direct our guests to the right places! Fortunately Chris's mum runs a furniture painting class, so we had all the supplies we needed as well as an expert teacher!
wedding signs
I was so excited about my guest book, so I made this sign out of cardboard and yarn.  Unfortunately this was one of the things that fell by the wayside on the day and I totally forgot about it! Oh well, it wouldn't have fitted on the table anyway!

This is really just a snippet of everything that was done, just the things I actually remembered to photograph along the way! I can't wait to show you some of the photos of the day itself!

It's good to be back! Are any of you planning a wedding?

How to Make Mendl's Courtesan Au Chocolat

how to make mend's courtesan au chocolate
Raise your hand if you like Wes Anderson! If you don't know what I am on about, run to your nearest cinema and go and watch 'The Grand Budapest Hotel'…. Ok, now you have done that I am sure you are just as in awe of Mr Anderson's wondrous brain as I was. If you liked this film be sure to check out his other films too, they are all awesome.

One of the most magical things in Grand Budapest Hotel is a delicious looking pastry, the 'Courtesan Au Chocolat'. When I discovered that Anderson's team had made a tutorial video on how to make it, I decided we had to give it a go ourselves. Especially since I had a special Wes Anderson fan in mind that this would make the perfect surprise gift for!

It was a fairly detailed recipe, and there were several points where I and my sous-chef Jess thought things were going terribly wrong! But in the end they turned out pretty darn well, even if I do say so myself! And yes, they were delicious, and they disappeared just as quickly as they did in the film!

I also found an Etsy shop that sells downloadable printouts of the boxes, which was the icing on the cake, (as it were) so we were able to present them very authentically indeed!

If you want to have a go at making a Courtesan Au Chocolat yourself you can watch the tutorial below, and it is super cute! If you do I'd love to see how it turns out!

The exact recipe for the Courtesan au chocolat has never been published or publicly disclosed as per the conditions of Herr Mendl’s will. However, the following has been collated and adapted from a several “pirate” sources in the Nebelsbad archives (including a 1963 recipe from the kitchen of the Grand Budapest Hotel using powdered eggs that was printed in the Lutz Daily Fact).

Overnight Oats Breakfast Recipe - Apple, Raisins and Cinnamon

apple crumble overnight oats breakfast recipe
Today I want to introduce you to my new best friend, overnight oats!

This is now officially my favorite breakfast. If you haven't heard of overnight oats, they are basically  porridge without the hassle of cooking the oats. Oh, and it's cold instead of hot!

You make up your oaty/porridge dry mixture and then soak them in milk (or a lacto-free version of milk. I use coconut milk), then you leave them overnight in the fridge. When you wake up in the morning your oats will be fully soaked and ready gobble down!

There are tons of recipes you can experiment with, but I am hooked on my first creation. Its an absolutely delicious apple crumble inspired recipe! If that sounds good to you, read on to find out the ingredients;

1 cup porridge oats
1 cup coconut milk
1/3 cup raisins
A small hand-full of goji berries
A squeeze of agave nectar
1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon
3 tablespoons of apple sauce

overnight oats cinnamon
The secret ingredient is the apple sauce. I made a massive batch of this a little while ago. It was really simple, I just stewed down some apples in boiling water and then strained and mashed them.  I put some of this in the freezer, so now I just take out as much as I need to defrost a few hours before I make my overnight oats. If you don't have any to hand you can substitute a little bit of the milk for apple juice which gives it a bit of an apple tang.

I really like the way that soaking them makes the raisins and goji berries so soft. Usually I find goji berries a little bitter, but you barely notice them in the mixture for this recipe!

Do you make overnight oats at all? If you do what are your favorite recipes?

Urbanears headphones review in association with 3

urban outfitters headphones
Hey guys, check out my new headphones!  I was approached by the lovely people at 3 to test out a product for my iPhone 4.

Recently I have been watching a lot of youtube wedding tutorials for make-up, hair and other DIY's on my phone. I picked these awesome Urbanear Plattan Coral headphones so that Chris would not have to be subjected to listening to them all! Also, I figured I could also use these with an iPad or our computer when I want to listen to music in the office.

When they arrived I was not disappointed! They came in a lovely box and were pretty cleverly packaged if you ask me!

I love the colour of them and think I will make a little place for them to hang on my wall like Elise has done in this post.

The sound quality is great too so I am looking forward to lots of evenings snuggled up by the fire 'researching'!urbanears headphones review

The headphones reviewed in the post above were kindly gifted to me by the people at 3.

January Review

In Life

Oh dear, what a terrible blogger I have been! Only 3 posts in January! Well I have been kind of busy I guess. It is now less than 4 months until our wedding, and I a freaking out a little bit! Things are just starting to come together though which is nice. The invites are nearly done, I've been making decorations, and my AMAZING guest book has arrived, which I can't wait to tell you all about at some point!

So you may not be seeing quite as much of me until the wedding is over, but I will be posting a fair amount over on my wedding blog Wrapped Up In Weddings if you want to catch up there. I've started a series of wedding nail designs  (pic below) and I think I might start reviewing Make-up for those wanting to do their own make-up on their wedding day. My latest post is about my experience getting  a free bridal make-up less on at Bobbi Brown! You can see it here.

Also, at the end of January I went on a little Skiing holiday to Avoriaz in the French Alps! I may do a post about this if I get time, because it was AWESOME! Here's a pic of the boys because they look way cooler than I did.

I am aware I have been slacking a little bit on the blog front, so I have given myself a challenge on Instagram to post a photo a day. You can see how I am getting on here.
