April Review

In Life

The big news this month is that I have handed my notice in at my day job! Some may say this is slightly crazy since we just had our offer accepted on a house! It was a tough decision to make, especially since I am a creature of habit and am terrified of change! But it was time for something different, and sometimes you just have to be brave and jump in! Chris and I want to grow our business,  The Band Boutique, and at the moment he just doesn't have the time to do it all on his own, so that is where I will be stepping in. If you are looking for a band or musician for your wedding or event then I am your gal! Also I am really excited to spend more time on this blog! Commuting to work has been taking up at least an hour and a half of each day, so I will have loads more time to spend whipping up ideas. My last day is May 10th, so wish me luck, I may cry!

Also, Chris's sister Rosie asked me to be one of her bridesmaids! Yippee!

What We Watched

Trance- We went to see this at the cinema. This film had more twists than a twisty-turny thing! It was quite difficult to keep up because it is largely about hypnotism and I wasn't sure what was real and what wasnsn't. But overall it was very enjoyable.
Grabbers - This is kind of a Sean of The Dead with sea monsters instead of zombies. I was a bit dubious because I hadn't heard of it before, but it was actually quite good! And the CGI sea mosters were better than I expected.
Despicable Me - We decided to watch this after spotting it on LoveFilm. Cute characters and an evil "genius" as a protagonist. What's not to love?
Evil Dead (The original) -  I know that this is a cult film, and if I was cool I would love it, but I'm afraid I'm not and I didn't! I actually found it quite boring (gasp!), sorry Evil Dead fans, this one was just not for me.
Evil Dead 2 - I had heard that the second film was better than the first, but again I was disappointed. It was basically the first film again with a weirder beginning and end.
Shaun Of The Dead - I caught this on the TV. It's one of those films that you can't tear yourself away from even if you have seen it loads of times before! I have always loved Sean Pegg and Nick Frost since Spaced, and I think that everything they have done since has been great too!

What I Read

Bright Young Things - Not to be mistaken for the film of the same name, this book is actually about a group of twenty somethings who all apply for a mysterious job advert, and subsequently are drugged  and kidnapped, and awake on an island. With no idea what they are doing there the group start to get to know eachother.  Unfortunately this book seems to have lost its ending, just as it is getting good the book just stops, leaving us with a million unanswered questions and not in a particularly good way either! The one thing I did enjoy about this book was a nostalgic references to 90's films, games, bands and TV programmes, other that that, it was a bit of a disappointment.
Life After LifeThis was a really fantastic book. Thanks to my new twitter buddy @acaseforbooks for suggesting this to me. You can read the full review here, and I strongly recommend that you do!
The Hundred-Year-Old-Man Who Climbed Out Of A Window And Dissappeared Oh my goodness, I loved this book! It was just the kind of light relief I needed after reading some fairly depressing books of late.  I will probably do a full review on this shortly so stay tuned.

In Blog Land

You may have noticed that the other day I posted my very first video! I am really excited about this because it was something I was terrified to do, but now that I have done it I am really pleased, and I am keen to do lots more in the future. I have got ideas for DIY's and Vlogs already! The video is actually a tutorial on how to put in Bobby Glam hair extensions, which is a bit of a departure from the norm, but I'd love to hear what you think of it!

March Review

In Life

The most exciting thing that has happened this month is this!  We've also got on well with our wedding planning and have recently booked our photographer. It's all happening!

What We Watched

Due Date - Starring Robert Downey Junior, and the crazy guy from The Hangover, this film was pretty funny, I enjoyed it
Goon - Sean William Scott plays a complete contrast to his American Pie character in this film. A sensitive guy, ironically a bouncer, who then ends up playing semi pro ice hockey. He can't skate, but he throws a mean punch! Not one I thought I would particularly like, but this is actually quite a sweet film despite its agressive subject matter!
Oz the great and powerful- I'm quite a fan of the original Wizard of Oz, so this was a great one to see at the cinema.  It tells the story of how the Wizard ended up in Oz,  and became the wizard! I found that it honoured the original well, starting in black and white, and changing to glorious colour once he reached Oz. It's got a great cast too.
Cockneys vs Zombies- This was a pretty standard British Zombie film, although it was no Shaun of the Dead!
The Promotion - Another Sean William Scott film. This time he plays alongside John C Reilly competing for a promotion (of course). A nice friday night film
Back to the Future and Back to the Future 3 - These are such classic films, although I definitely need to watch Back to the Future 2 now!

The Walking Dead - We are most excited about the season finale airing in America on Sunday.  If you like zombie films and you haven't watched this series yet I suggest you check it out, it is awesome!

What I Read

Trash - A wonderful book! You can read the full review here
Jamrachs Menagerie - I bought this after Amazon recommended it to me as similar to The Night Circus. It was not at all what I expected!  It is about a boy, Jaffy, who escapes the slums of Victorian London with a chance encounter of a Tiger and his owner, Jamrach! However, the story takes a rather unexpected turn when Jaffy goes off to sea to hunt for a Dragon, and the ship sinks! I won't tell you what happens in case you want to read it, but be warned, it is not for the faint hearted!

In Blog Land

This was the month of the Cambridge Blogger Meet or #CamBlogMeet. It was fantastic and we were given a wonderful goodie bag each. I can't wait for the next blogger meet up! I may even be organising one myself so watch this space!

This month I have also done 17 posts in total, that is the most I have ever done in a month, yay for March!

February Review

In Life

As you may have seen in this post, Chris's little sister got engaged! It is crazy to think how fast things have moved in the last couple of years, and how grown up we are getting! We have a good few years of wedding excitement ahead now, hurrah! We have also been looking at houses to buy, we really must be proper grown ups now!

What We Watched

12 Monkeys - I loved this crazy film! Basically Bruce Willis is in the future, and nearly everyone on the planet has been wiped out by a terrible disease. Brucey is sent back in time to try to gather evidence about the disease and how it was created.  Or is he just a mental case... you decide.  Brad Pitt also plays a brilliant, if slightly unstable character in this film. Definitely worth a watch
Bunny and The Bull - This was a bit of a trippy film about a guy who hasn't left his house for a year and the story behind it. It's by the same people behind The Mighty Boosh, and you could definitely tell! Many of our favourite Boosh actors appear too. If you liked the Mighty Boosh you will probably like this. Otherwise, you might be a bit confused!
The Brothers Grimm - I really enjoyed this film, it probably wasn't a perfectly accurate portrayal of how The Brothers Grim created their tales, but it was certainly an exciting one! It starred Matt Damon and Heath Ledger (who seems to have gone a bit Captain Jack Sparrow),  and had the perfect balance between darkness and comedy. It was worth a watch!

What I Read

The 5 people you meet in heaven- I did enjoy this book, and the concept behind it is very interesting. Apparently there is a made for TV movie of it starring Jon Voight which I would be interested to see.
The Night Time Circus- This book was amazing! You can read my full review here.
Life of Pi - Another great book. Hopefully I will do a review about this one soon! I am looking forward to watching the film too.

January Review

In Life...

We looked for houses, planned weddings and got organised!

What We Watched...

Sunshine Cleaning - My friend lent me this and I really enjoyed it. It is a bit of a strange subject matter though, about 2 sisters who start up a crime scene clean up service. Interesting!
Lord of The Rings Return of the King - I believe I only every watched this once before, which is terrible seeing as how big a LOTR fan I used to be, and how many times I had watched the others.  But it made watching it again all the more enjoyable. I am REALLY looking forward to the next part of The Hobbit coming out now!
Snakes on a Plane - Did  what it said on the packet! I have to say I do really like Samuel L Jackson in pretty much any film!
Django Unchained - This was awesome! I used to be a real Tarantino fan so it was great to see this. It was rather strange watching it at the cinema at 11am though!

What I read...

The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the ring - You may be sensing a theme here. I'm swatting up for the next Hobbit film. Also, if there are any LOTR based pub quizzes going on in the near future I will surely come in handy!

A Street Cat named Bob - What a sweet book this was. Any cat fans out there should read this!

The Great Gatsby - I have been meaning to read this for a long time and when it was on offer on the Kindle for only 70p I jumped at the chance.

The Happiness Project - This book was really inspiring and I can relate so much to Gretchen! It's definitely worth a read. She has a blog too which you can find here.

In Blog Land...

This has been a month of firsts for my little blog! I jumped in to the crazy world of outfit posts with this post. I also decided it was time to host my first giveaway!

I received a liebster award from Besma at Bonjour Madmoiselle, how exciting! Because I had received one of these before ( you can see the first post here) I decided I would answer Besma's questions on my monthly review, so here they are..
  1. If you could be any film character for real, who would you be? I think Marilyn Monroe's character Sugar Kane, from Some Like it Hot would be fun. She carries a hip flask, she seems like a fun gal!
  2. Favourite artist/piece of art? This is difficult! I don't think I have one actually. I do like art, but I've never really had a favourite artist.
  3. Best band you have seen live? 'Everything Everything'. They were amazing and seemed genuinely excited that the crowd knew all their songs, I think we must have been at one of the first gigs of their tour.
  4. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be? I would stay in England but find somewhere really quaint and pretty. Can I have a holiday home somewhere thats always warm though? I'm having enough trouble deciding where to live in real life so this is probably not the best question for me to answer!
  5. Favourite author/writer/poet? This is a tricky one, there are so many! But since I am totally obsessed with Lord Of the Rings and The Hobbit at the moment I will have to say J.R.R.Tolkein
  6. If you had one wish, what would you wish for? Eternal Happiness! Thats pretty all encompassing, right?
  7. Do you have a phobia of anything? Large replica whales and dinosaurs. I have trouble in museums!
  8. Do you still get Deja Vu? I used to get this SO often, I haven't noticed it as much recently but I do still get it from time to time.
  9. Biggest guy crush? When I was a teenager I had a massive crush on Josh Hartnett.I remember having a picture of him on one of my school exercise books.
  10. Biggest girl crush? Probably Zooey Deschannel, I do love New Girl!
  11. Gold or silver jewellery? Gold
Thanks again Besma!

December Review

In Life

What a wonderful morning to start the new year on, it is lovely and sunny here! Just a shame I am too tired from last night to really do anything!

I've had quite a relaxing month as I had a 2 week holiday, and to kick it off I had all my lovely bridesmaids over for a party. You can see what happened here.  We did a little more wedding planning over the month and have even decided to start looking for a house!

What We Watched

Seven Psychopaths - This was great, not really what I had expected but I enjoyed it all the same. Brilliant cast too.
Bridesmaids - Very funny, hopefully I won't get into any of these sorts of situations with my bridesmaids!
The Jerk - My parents told us that we would like this, and we did! It was very funny in an absolutely ridiculous way. A Steve Martin Classic.
Predator - This is one of Chris' favourite films, so I thought it was about time I watched it.
Paul - I loved this! I love all things Simon Pegg and Nick frost, but I didn't manage to catch this when it came out at the cinema.
The Hobbit - This was absolutely awesome. I used to be a real LOTR geek, and this definitely made me want to watch them all again! Hence the next two films!
Lord of the rings - Fellowship of the ring - Awesome!
Lord of the rings - Two Towers - Awesome!

What I Read

I have challenged myself to read more next year, so I thought I would get going early. I'm thinking about getting a Kindle with my Christmas money, so hopefully that will make it easier for me to read lots more. If you have any recommendations of good books i'd love to hear them, I'm interested in broadening my horizons!

The Secret Lives of Dresses by Erin McKean - This was a pretty girlie book, obviously lots about dresses! But I did enjoy it
The Gunslinger by Stephen King - I'm still undecided about Stephen King. I love some of his books, The Stand is one of my all time favourites, but there are others that I have found to be quite forgettable. Chris started reading the Dark Tower series, so I thought I would give it a go too. The first book is quite difficult to read but apparently they get easier, so I am going to persevere!

In Blog Land

I was very lucky to be asked by Claire of Claireabellemakes to guest post on her blog while she was away on holiday. You can see the post about DIY Stamps here.

I started a new Wedding Blog so that I can document all of my ideas, I am really looking forward to getting stuck in!

I won a competition over at the cookie button! I was really excited when I received an email from Sammy on Saturday to say that I had won. I was feeling really under the weather with a yucky cold, but this totally brightened my day! Especially since the prizes were all so wonderful, and also included a personalised portrait from Chantal from Pony Chops and some hand drawn prints from Beth at Deer Little Fawn - two of my favourite bloggers plus lots of other goodies from other lovely ladies.

November Review

 In Life

Its been a fairly quiet month this november. I have finally been offered a permanent job at work, which is great! I have been working as a temp for 3 and a half years, so it feels great to have been taken on at long last!

What We Watched

Tron - (The original one) Anything with Jeff Bridges in is going to be good to some extent. Tron is a pretty weird film, but it has a cool concept. I'm a fan of 80's films so I was always going to be happy, but I think the 'special effects' perhaps took away from the story.

Dale and Tucker vs Evil - This film was awesome, and way better than I expected it to be to be honest. Basically its a horror spoof, where 2 hillbillys get mistaken for mass murderers. It was hilarous and you really grow to love the 2 main characters, they are just so likeable but everything keeps going wrong for them. Watch it!

Tremors - A classic, but the first time I have ever watched it. It was brilliant!

The Wolfman - Can't complain, this was what is said on the tin. It was pretty good. I hadn't really seen Benicio Del Toro in a main role before, I didn't really know who he was to be honest, but now I do! Especially since he was in the next film we watched which was...

Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas - Now this was a really weird one! I read the book a few years ago so I thought I knew what to expect, but I was still a bit surprised by the trippiness of it . Johnny Depp was brilliant as always and I though Benicio Del Toro was good too, but perhaps not one I would watch again in a hurry.

We are now up to date with Breaking Bad! Looking forward to when they release the next episodes. Dexter has been great recently too but my favourite is still Walking Dead. I just can't get enough of those zombies! What have you been watching recently?

In Blog Land

As a result of my blog I got a little article published in 'Pretty Nostalgic Magazine'. I was so pleased to be approached by Jo to do a piece based on my sea glass collecting. What a lovely magazine to be a part of!

October Review

I thought I would start doing a little monthly review to tell you about a few things I couldn't devote an entire post to, and also to recap my favourite blog posts from the month. So here's what's been going on...

In life ...

Chris and I celebrated out Engagement on the 7th with a mahoosive party! We had a brilliant time.

Chris and I started up our 'date nights' on thursdays again.  So far we have had a 'Red Dwarf' themed evening, complete with holographic H's to wear on our heads, a pumkin carving evening, and last week Chris took me to see Great Expectations at the Mayflower. It was great!

We went with Chris's sister and her boyfriend to see our friends in 'Loserville'. This is a brilliant musical showing at the Garrick theatre in London. The song's are written by James Bourne of Busted and Son Of Dork.  Our friends are the guitarists in the band (If you go you must scream and wave your arms madly when they come on the stage) who managed to get our names onto the guestlist for a gig where they played in the band with James Bourne and played several of his past hits with Son of Dork and Busted! It was pretty cool! They're kind of a big deal...

What we watched...

This month has been soo good for TV. So many brilliant series' have re-started... Dexter, Red Dwarf and our favourite Walking dead! Homeland and Once Upon a Time have also apparently back on, but we have been so busy finishing Breaking Bad and all of the above that we haven't had enough time to check them out yet!

We went to see 'Resident Evil: Retribution' after having watched the first 4 movies in quick succession. I thought it was pretty good and I think Chris enjoyed it too!

In blog land...

I feel I have started a new chapter with the blog this month. You may have noticed that we have had a little overhall of the design, and I am really pleased with it. Chris helped me make it exactly what I wanted. I have also gotten a lot more organised with planning my posts. I am hoping this will mean posting more often and better quality posts too! I'm looking to connect with other like minded bloggers, so please get in contact if you would like to work together in one way or another, or just to say hello!
