DIY Honeycomb Shrinky Dink Earrings

DIY honeycomb earrings using shrinky dink plastic
The other day I showed you my DIY gemstone jewellery tutorial using shrinky dink plastic. Well I also made some honeycomb earrings, but I didn't feel they fitted with that post, so here is a little bonus.

I am really pleased with these because they are a little bit different and they are inspired by my admiration of honey bees! If you don't remember why I like bees you may want to take a look at a couple of my very early posts here and here

Anyway, the method to make these is really easy. I found a honeycomb pattern online and printed it out onto the shrinky dink plastic. I debated about what shapes to cut out, but in the end I went for the traditional hexagon.  I put them together in the same way I did the earrings in this postDIY honeycomb shrinky dinky plastic earrings
What do you think? Do you like them?  Shrinky dink plastic is so versatile, I love the stuff!

DIY Shrinky Dink Jewellery Tutorial - Diamonds are a girls best friend!

shrinky dink diy jewellery tutorial
Remember a little while back when I made Game Of Thrones sigil badges out of shrinky dinks? Well I'm at it again, but this time I am making fancy jewellery!

It is true what they say. Diamonds ARE a girls best friend! And so are crystals and emeralds and sapphires, anything pretty really. BUT who says they have to be real? If you cant afford a selection of jewellery with real diamonds and other gem stones, (lets face it, who can?) then why not make your own for super cheap?  They are pretty darn easy to make too! So today I am going to show you how you can quickly knock up your own gemstone earrings, necklace and brooch!
Before you start you will need to find some gem stone shapes which you like, and can print out. I downloaded most of the diamond/gemstone/crystal shapes from mini-eco. Aren't they so pretty! I love all of Kate's Tutorials, they are fantastic, you can check them out here. I copied the image onto my computer and coloured each gem stone shape separately.

Emerald Brooch

You will need:
  • Shrinky Dink Printable Paper - print out 1 gemstone (mine measured  approx 6cm by 5cm at its widest points before being cooked.)
  • An Oven
  • A Brooch Back
  • Superglue

Print out your gemstone onto the shrinky dink paper, and cut it out carefully. Bear in mind before you print that it will shrink quite considerably, and the colour will also darken. Follow the instructions on your packet to get the best results. Here is what mine looked like before I had cooked it...

shrinky dink diamond...and here is what it looked like afterwards. Quite a difference right? So make sure you are printing it big enough for your brooch back to fit on. Once you have cooked it, all you need to do is glue on the brooch back with the super glue, (be careful not to get it on your fingers!) and you're done!diamond shrinky dink diy

Diamond Earrings

You will need:

  • Shrinky Dink Printable Paper- print out 2 diamonds -  (measuring approx 5.2cm by 4.8cm at the widest points before being cooked)
  • An Oven
  • Earwire hooks with spring and ball (or dangly earrings to you and me)
  • 4 small jump rings
  • A hole punch
  • Tweezers

shrinky dinky diamond
Start off by printing and cutting out your gemstone shape again, but this time you are going to punch a hole in it at the top so that we can attach the earring. It is easier if you have a single hole punch, but it could be done with a normal one if needed.
diy shrinky dinks
Then, bake it as before, and when it is done you can attach the earring.  I found that I needed to attach 2 jump rings, as when I only attached one the diamond was facing sideways rather than forwards. I don't have any proper jewellery making equipment, so I just made do with a pair of tweezers. You will need to bend each jump ring to hook it on, then bend it back once it is attached, and I found that was the easiest way to do it.

Gemstone Necklacediy shrinky dink diamond and gem stone necklace tutorial

You will need:

  • Shrinky Dink Printable Paper-print out 5 gemstones (the diamond in the middle measured 5.2cm by 4.8cm before it went in the oven)
  • An Oven
  • A piece of chain
  • 6 jump rings
  • A hole punch
  • Tweezers

shrinky dink diamond necklace
Follow the same steps as with the earrings, but instead of punching one hole at the top, you will need to punch one hole on either side of each gem before baking.  Once cooked simply attach a jump ring to either end of your chain, then attach the gems to each other until both ends of the chain are linked up.

I hope you enjoyed my Shrinky Dink DIY'S today. I do have one more I would like to share with you, but I will save that for another day. If you do give this a go I would love to see your results!

DIY plant pot tutorial (for baby succulents)

DIY succulent plant pot tutorial
Earlier this week I recieved a lovely little package from Harriet. Inside were some lovely little succulent babies! I didn't really have any suitable plant pots so I thought I would make some out of some glass tumblers I bought a little while ago from Morrisons. I got a set of 4 for just £1. I thought I'd try out three different DIY tutorials to spruce them up.

Washi Tape design
Lets start with a simple one! I don't think I need to tell you how to do this, but what I would suggest is that if your Washi tape is not particularly sticky, then use a little bit of double sided tape or a dab of glue to secure the end down.
spray paint polkadot plant pot tutorial
Polkadot spray paint design
To achieve this look I used a single whole punch on some masking tape. Then I wrapped the tape securely around the glass. I turned the glass upside down to spray paint, and then once it was dry I peeled off the tape.

Sharpie actually lasts pretty well on glass, especially if it is on something that isn't handled often like a flower pot. I hand drew these arrows, but you could really go wild with this and draw whatever you want!

So there you go! Which one is your favourite?

I think these little pots will be great for all my succulent babies, but once they get a bit bigger I will plant them up properly in bigger pots with drainage. I can't wait for them to grow up! I'm looking forward to displaying them in my new conservatory!

Thanks Harriet!

A DIY Personalised Housewarming Gift Idea

DIY Housewarming card
This week, one of my best friends, Kate, and her boyfriend, moved into their very first house! It has all been very exciting, because originally we were buying a house in the same street! Unfortunately, ours didn't quite work out, but the good news is that we have now found somewhere even better, and it is still only a 6 minute walk from their house, hurrah! I am very excited to become neighbours, so fingers crossed this one goes smoothly.

As you can see from my little interpretation above, their house is absolutely lovely! I thought I should take them over a little house warming gift, but I knew that they had been shopping for most things already, so I settled for something which I believe you can't have too many of, wooden spoons!

But wooden spoons are usually a bit boring aren't they? So I thought I would share with you the quick make over I gave them. (Kate, if you are reading this, it wasn't quick at all, it was a long and painstaking process!)

First of all, in case you can't imagine it, here is a picture of some normal wooden spoons...
Plain wooden spoons
All I did was to mask of little sections of the spoons with washi tape. Then I used different coloured acrylic paint in each section. I had to give each one 2 coats.
diy fancy wooden spoons
Once it was dry I just removed the masking tape and and gave it a coat of clear sealer. Making sure to only get the sealer on the painted parts of the spoons, and no further down (I don't want to poison anyone!) And here they are finished...
diy painted wooden spoons
Now these probably wouldn't hold up that well in a dishwasher, but for a quick (not quick Kate!) personalised gift I don't think they are too shabby. And whats better is that they hadn't even bought any wooden spoons yet, woohoo!

Have you made anything in the past to give as a housewarming gift?

Shrinky Dink DIY - Game of Thrones Sigil Badges

DIY Game of thrones sigil badges
The other day I promised you a Game Of Thrones themed shrinky dink tutorial. Well I hope you won't be disappointed because I have put every effort into making these as accurate as possible, using my GOT nerd knowledge.

Essentially what we are making is little badges, so if you aren't a GOT fan you can always adapt the idea to make something else.  I will share a few things I learned about shrinky dinks along the way.

So, without further ado, I present to you DIY GOT House sigil badges, featuring Lannister, Baratheon and Stark!

What you will need;
Shrinky Dink Paper (printable)
An Oven
A Brooch Back
Paint (can be spray paint, nail varnish or something else)
Glue

First of all decide what you want on your brooch and find images online. For these I simply found a shield outline, and the 3 animals on the Game of Thrones Sigils. Remember, we can paint these afterwards so it is really just the outline that is imporant. You will see that I reversed the Stark Direwolf below, that was because I did think I might just leave it white, so I didn't want any of the print on the side it was supposed to face.

If you had really good images I suppose you could just print them directly onto the shield design. But I decided to print them all separately, so they would have a 3D effect.

Copy and paste the images into a word document or another computer program, and print out onto your shrinky dink plastic. Then you will need to be patient and cut out each shape. Make sure you get in all the detail, it may take a little while but it is well worth it! Once I had done this I placed all my animals on top of the shields to get an idea of scale. I decided that the wolf and the lion were too big, so you will notice that later on I switched to smaller versions.
game of thrones diy
To get an idea of the size they are likely to come out, my shields measured 4.8cm by 6cm at their widest points when I printed them. Once they had been in the oven they measured about 2.8cm by 3cm. So make sure you make your images big enough. Here's the size before and after;
DIY shield brooch
Now follow the instructions on your shrinky dink packet.  Mine told me to make sure all the pieces were separate and put them on some baking paper. They took between 3 - 5 minutes to cook, and you could tell when they were done because they would curl up, and then flatten out. When they were flat again they were done. It was actually really interesting to watch!
Game of thrones sigil badges
Once all of your pieces are cooked you can think about what colours you want to paint them. I used spray paint on the wolf, lion and yellow shield, and nail varnish on the red and white shield. I think I preferred the evenness of the spray paint, but use whatever you have to hand!

When these are completely dry, glue both pieces of plastic together, then glue the brooch back on too.

And you're finished! You can wear you sigil brooch with pride! But which house will you choose?

I can't decide! Which house would you pick?

I hope you enjoyed my tutorial, even if you aren't a Game of Thrones fan. The possibilities really are endless with Shrinky Dink plastic. Although I do wish it was called something slightly less silly!

You can take a peek at what else I have been making in this post.

Guest Post - DIY pom pom necklace

DIY Pompom necklace

I should be heading back from my holiday in Turkey today, but whilst I am recuperating from the journey, here is one of my blog pals from across the pond to with another great DIY!...

Hi guys! My name is Erica and I blog over at Caught On A Whim.  I love creating beautiful things and am so excited that Laura invited me to share this fun DIY with you today.

Ready to create a fun pom pom necklace?

HERE'S THE HOW TO:

Stuff you'll need:

Wooden beads
Twine
Yarn
Scissors
Fork

Method:

1. First, we'll attach the wooden beads to the twine. To start, simply thread the twine through the bead like so:

2. Next, loop the twine around and through the bead once more. Be sure the bead is placed where you want it to be on the necklace.

3. Pull the twine tight. Now, the twine is wrapped around the bead. This will hold the bead in place on the necklace. Add as many beads to the necklace as you'd like.

4. Now, we will make some mini pom poms using a fork. First, wrap yarn around the fork. I wrapped my yarn around about 50 times. Next, tie a strand of yarn around the wrapped yarn. Make it nice and tight. Finally, take the yarn off the fork and clip the loops on both sides. Fluff up your pom to get it nice and plump, and trim it into a nice round shape. (P.S. This is a helpful video tutorial for making pom poms this way.)

5. To attach the poms to your necklace, use a large needle to thread the twine through the poms.

That's all there is to it! I love how fun this necklace is! You can mix it up with different beads or changing up the pom pom colors. The possibilities are endless!
DIY POMPOM NECKLACE

It's been so great to meet you guys, and a special thanks to Laura for having me over today!

If you try out this tutorial, be sure to let me know. I'd love to see yours!

Erica x

Thanks Erica! This is a very cute DIY, I'd love to give these pompoms a go, maybe even make a whole necklace from them as well, like a pompom garland!

I hope you all enjoyed this as much as I did.

Guest Post - DIY Braided Watch Strap

diy braided watch strap
So I am on day 5 of my holiday and I have a nice tan, and have not yet fallen off of the boat ( I hope, I actually have no idea since I wrote this before I left!)

Anyway, today I have Cambridge Crafter and Blogger, Claire from Claireabellemakes keeping you entertained with a DIY braided watch strap, take it away Claire...

Hi guys! I’m so excited to be here on Laura’s blog today whilst she is off on her hols (lucky thing).

I know Laura is a big fan of DIY and jewellery like me, so I thought I’d share a little tutorial today for a DIY Braided Watch Strap. It uses the simple knots that are used to make friendship bracelets, so it might be a bit of a nostalgic craft for some of you! I hope the photo step-by-step guide is clear, but if not just tweet me @claireabellemks or send me an email at claireabellemakes@gmail.com.

Happy Crafting!

Claire x

The supplies I used are from Knot and Bow (glitter twine) and eBay (jewellery findings and tools).
